General Overview:
- Sexual reproduction invoves formation of basidia and basidiospores
- Members have complex septate hyphae
- Members of the Basidiomycetes class are dikaryotic - multiple nuclei per cell without fusing still (N) haploid
See Pictures below
Classification of Basidiomycota:
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum (division): Basidiomycota
Major Classes:
Teliomycetes (Rusts) | Ustomycetes (smuts) | Basidiomycetes
Class: Teliomycetes (Rusts)
- Serious parasites of plants
- Does not produce basidiocarps
- Basidia often septate or forked
Puccinia graminis (wheat rust)
- Life cycle includes, aecia, spermagonia stages on a barberry plant
- uredinia and telia stages on the wheat plant
- See: wheat rust life cycle
Gymnosporangium (ceadar apple rust)
- Another rust that infects apple trees
- Can be devistating to apple orchards
Class: Ustomycetes (Smuts)
- Parcites similar to Teliomycetes with septate basidia but usually with only one host
Ustilago maydis (corn smut)
Class: Basidiomycetes
Orders (series):
-
Hymenomycetes - mushrooms, bracket fungi, coral fungi
- Basidia are produced on the basidiocarp.
- Basidia are non-septate, swollen, and club-shaped produced on a fertile layer called hymenium
- Most are saprophytes
-
Gasteromycetes - puffballs, stinkhorns, bird's nest fungi
- Basidia are produced in the basidiocarp
- Examples:
- Stinkhorns, bird's nest fungi, and puffballs
